Chasing Powder in British Columbia

I was lucky enough to sneak away for a quick trip to Canada in early February, and it turned out to be such an amazing experience. If you’re dreaming of a ski holiday that feels more relaxed, authentic, and genuinely fun, Kimberley and Fernie in British Columbia should definitely be on your list.

These two ski resorts feel like stepping back in time to what skiing used to be — before huge crowds and long lift lines became the norm. Kimberley Alpine Resort has a warm, welcoming vibe that makes you slow down and really enjoy the experience. The slopes are beautifully groomed, the sun seems to shine a little more often here, and the mountain rarely feels crowded.

The Bavarian-style village adds to the charm, with cute shops, cosy cafés, and that classic ski-town atmosphere that makes you want to linger after the lifts close. Night skiing is one of Kimberley’s famous defining features, with one of North America’s longest illuminated runs.

Then there’s Fernie Alpine Resort — famous for its incredible powder (reputedly the best in the Rockies!) and jaw-dropping scenery. With five big alpine bowls and amazing tree runs, it offers plenty of adventure for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The best part? You often feel like you almost have the mountain to yourself.

Both towns are packed with personality, friendly locals, and some seriously good food. One of my personal favourites is Loaf Italian Restaurant in Fernie — the perfect spot for a delicious feed of authentic Italian food after a big day on the mountain.

If you love great skiing, beautiful scenery, and laid-back mountain towns, Canada’s Kimberley and Fernie are hard to beat.
