The Insider Secrets That Save Smart Travellers Thousands

The hidden costs of booking online that nobody tells you about — until it's too late

By Marie Sulda, Founder of WeExplored

You've done everything right. You spent an evening comparing flights across three different websites, found what looked like the best deal, cross-referenced the accommodation on a booking platform, and paid in full. Holiday sorted.

Then the problems start.

The flight that wasn't what it seemed

The itinerary looked perfect online. But what the booking platform didn't show you was a better combination, one that existed all along, just out of reach of the algorithm. The data feeds that power these platforms can be aggregated, incomplete, out of date, or quietly add more fees by the time you hit the purchase cart.

And when something goes wrong, the cracks really show. During the escalation of the Middle East conflict, WeExplored was inundated with travellers who had booked their own flights online (many of them routed through the region) suddenly scrambling for answers. What are my fare rules? Can I change my routing? Am I entitled to a refund? These are not questions that resolve quickly on a helpline. And honestly — who has an hour or two to sit on hold?

For WeExplored clients, it was a phone call. Or a text. Someone who already knew their booking, understood the fare conditions, and could act immediately to find alternate routes and protect their travel investment.

The price that wasn't the price

Here's something some booking platforms idn't mention in bold: that rate displayed in Australian dollars? It's an estimate.

Scroll to the fine print and you'll find a small disclaimer noting that while prices are shown in AUD for convenience, the actual charge will be processed in the local currency of the property. The exchange rate applied to your card will be your bank's rate, not the one you googled. And unless you hold a fee-free international card, there's a foreign transaction fee on top of that.

What looked like a $400 per night hotel room can quietly become something quite different by the time the charge clears. Multiply that across several nights, add the transaction fees, and the "great deal" you found online starts to look a lot less impressive.

Book through an agent and secure your accommodation in Australian dollars — confirmed rate, no conversion surprises, no hidden surcharges. What you're quoted is what you pay.

The rate you'd never find yourself

This is where it gets interesting and where the real value of a travel agent becomes impossible to ignore.

Travel agents don't just book what's publicly available. Years of supplier partnerships, preferred relationships, and consistent volume give agents access to preferred pricing on selected properties that simply doesn't exist on any website you can visit. It's not universal, but when it applies, the difference can be extraordinary.

Take a recent example. A two-bedroom villa (the kind of property booked for a milestone occasion), was listed on the properties website at over $12,000. Through one of our trusted supplier relationships, the same villa came in at $6,800. Over five thousand dollars saved. Not through a discount code or a flash sale. Just through knowing the right people.

For luxury travel, honeymoons, milestone birthdays, or any trip where the accommodation is the experience, it's always worth asking your agent what's available through their supplier network before assuming the price online is the best you'll find.

The part that's genuinely hard to put a price on

A good travel agent is an advocate, a problem-solver, and someone who has probably been to the place you're going — or knows someone who has. They know which properties deliver on their promise and which ones look better in photos. They know how to escalate quickly when an airline makes life difficult. And they're reachable by a text message, not a forty-five minute hold queue.

The next time you find yourself down a rabbit hole of tabs, comparing prices that may not even be accurate, ask yourself: how much is my time worth, and am I actually getting the deal I think I am?

Chances are, a two-minute conversation with an agent would answer both questions.
